GLaM update June 2021
Let’s get started!
Since our last update, we have been very busy pulling together the final designs and securing the next tranche of funding from SEMLEP; the main funders.
This is an exciting and busy time for the three key services and project team! Please find some further updates below to bring you up to speed with where we are, and what to expect over the coming months.
Construction/site compound
The main site compound will be located in the lower section of the council’s London Road car park, with a smaller section being cordoned off for vehicle movements within the top section. Access for construction vehicles will be via London Road.
The Blitz Tea Room and the Cornmaket Hall operators who will be operating as usual. Parking will be reduced in the area but there is plenty overspill parking in other sites including:
- Commercial Road, NN16 8DQ
- Wadcroft, NN16 8TH
- School Lane, NN16 0DH
- Queen Street, NN16 0BZ
Access to the Church and wider town centre via the arch behind the Museum will be maintained throughout.
The construction period is estimated to take until March 2022. The re-opening plans are still in development; we will have a further update on this over the summer months.
The Gallery decant
The decant of the Gallery collection is now complete with the support of a specialist contractor. This is no small task so well done Gallery team!
The Library closure
The library has now temporarily closed as of the 29th May, and the team have been especially busy clearing and packing up the library furniture in advance of works. The team will be fully off site by the 11th June.
The library team have been busy seeking an alternative facility within the town centre to offer a contained library service during the construction period. If we can make this work we will be back in touch to provide an update!
This is an exciting time for the project, we hope to bring you regular progress photos via this blog over the coming months!
